I realized that I am being hard on myself for not updating this blog frequently enough, and as each day passes and I feel more and more guilty for not posting, more and more happens that I don’t get to post about! So I’m going to forgo trying to catch up and start fresh from today and hopefully keep it up for the remaining six weeks.
This week we have continued working on our wood carvings. We are each working on our own individual projects. I’ve decided to work on a series of prints based on movie stills from Hitchcock movies, but illustrated for children…sort of like Hitchcock for Kids. I like the idea of taking stills from all sorts of suspense movies and making them look like they are made for children. Our visiting artist—Micah, a friend of Bryan’s from NYC—arrived today so I showed him around the campus a bit and visited a few of the other studios. He will be working with our class for the next couple of days.
The leaves are beginning to change here, and the weather has been cool and nice. Jesse sent my coat and cold weather clothes and they arrived yesterday, so I feel a bit more prepared weather-wise here. This week the campus seems much busier because several one-week courses began, so there are many new faces everywhere. Bryan’s sister is in town from Illinois, and she is taking a Studio Lighting for Photography course. Our class has also been very busy getting things together for the Core Show dinner, a nice little event for the students that have actually been living and working at Penland for the past two years (Core Students). They have a fancy dinner for them, and each of the concentrations is asked to donate something to the dinner. We decided to make some really nice decorations in the form of banners printed with various patterns and textures. We worked last night on sewing them together, and should be able to wrap them all up tonight. They look amazing! I will post a picture later on or tomorrow to show you the finished product.
I think that is all for now in terms of current news. I will definitely do better from this point on for updating, and will fill you in on all that’s gone on in the past couple of weeks when I can!
